Today, I would like to introduce an application that I helped create in its early stages. It has been a while since I was last able to lend a hand, but I have followed the initiative closely, and I believe it is interesting to share, as it can be useful for many secondary schools.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

In Catalonia, spanning between the first and second years of Batxillerat<\/em> (upper secondary education), there is a subject called Treball de Recerca<\/em> (Research Project). As the name suggests, all students must carry out a research project, usually in small groups. Through this, students learn how to pose hypotheses, search for reliable sources, cite them correctly, conduct fieldwork to confirm or dismiss the hypothesis, draw conclusions, and so on.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

This application, TRapp, helps to manage the complete tracking of all these research projects within a school (students, tutors, evidence, assessment, reports, etc.).<\/p>\n\n\n\n

It can also be useful for schools outside of Catalonia that carry out research projects with students in a structured manner regarding time and format. However, for the time being, it is only available in Catalan, though being open-source software, anyone can translate it.<\/p>\n\n\n\n\n\n\n\n

The application divides the process of completing the research project into six stages. In each stage, students learn an important aspect of research and submit evidence of this learning. The tutor and other evaluating teachers, if defined, assess these pieces of evidence, providing feedback so that the student can improve them.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

At the end of the process, the application also generates the final reports.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

But let’s start from the beginning. This application has been possible thanks to Jordi P\u00e9rez, from the Pau Vila High School in Sabadell. He had the idea, he defined the learning path for the students, and he has overseen the development of the application in recent times. I only built the version of the application for the first academic year.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

We must also thank the teaching staff at the Pau Vila High School, who have used the TRapp<\/a> application over the last two school years and have made many suggestions for improvement\u2014in addition to having to exercise a bit of patience at times, as being beta testers is not always a thankless task.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

The application works in schools that have their own Google Workspace domain. It is an application created within this domain; therefore, the data resides solely in files within the school’s Google Drive.<\/p>\n\n\n\n

Mind you, it is worth noting that webapps built with Google Apps Script, as is the case here, are not exactly known for their speed. So, while it is perfectly usable, there will be moments when you might wish it were a bit faster (especially for the administrator).<\/p>\n\n\n\n
